How SEO works

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of fine-tuning your website so search engines like Google understand it, trust it, and rank it higher in search results. The goal is to drive free, organic traffic by matching your website’s content with what users are actively searching for.

Search engines operate through three core steps:

1. Crawling

Search engines send out automated robots (crawlers or spiders) to explore the internet. They follow links from site to site, discovering new pages and gathering data on what those pages are about. [1, 2]

2. Indexing

Once the crawlers read the pages, the information is organized and stored in a massive digital library called an index. A page cannot appear in search results until it has been successfully crawled and indexed. [1, 2, 3]

3. Ranking

When a user types a query, the search engine’s algorithm sifts through billions of pages in its index in a fraction of a second. It ranks the results based on hundreds of factors, delivering the most relevant and trustworthy answers to the top of the page.
